Melica californica, known by the common name California Melicgrass, is a species in the Poaceae (Grass) family. It is native to Oregon and California, where it grows in many types of habitats, from mountain forests to open grassland at sea level. In California it is found primarily in the Coast Ranges and Sierra foothills.
California Melicgrass is a perennial grass, generally with rhizomes, producing a dense cluster of stems up to about 4 ft. (1.3 meters) in maximum height. The flower cluster is a narrow series of purple-banded green spikelets. The flower clusters are attractive even after this grass has gone dormant in late summer or fall. In cultivation it performs best in part shade with low to moderate water.

Silver Bush Lupine is a California native plant that thrives here in this climate. A drought resistant shrub it is wonderful habitat for our native wildlife. The hand shaped leaves have a silvery sheen which is distinctive of this Lupine. Puts up showy spikes of purple blooms in spring. Drought tolerant and hardy once established, can do well in poor or sandy soil.

This California native is a truly amazing plant. In addition to making a wonderful shrub that has a lovely yellow flower in the spring it also produces tasty Currant berries! Being a native plant it thrives on our summer drought and winter rains and is also appealing habitat for our native animals.
Hearty small to medium bush, without much need for special care. Can be pruned to maintain desired size and shape. Yellow flowers in the spring attract pollinators. Small sweet berries also attract wildlife, they can range from yellow to red when ripe. In the fall the leaves put on a show changing to yellow and red before they fall.

Penstemon spectabilis is a beautiful perennial flower native to southern California and Mexico. It grows 3-4 feet tall and puts on a showy purple blooms in early spring. Being a native plant it is highly adapted to the heat and dryness of this area, in addition it is wonderful habitat for our native birds and insects. Drought resistant. Trim back after it blooms. Plants live around 5-10 year, but often self seed.

Mesquite trees are deciduous trees with feathery green leaves and thorny twigs. Mesquite trees grow a deep root system which makes them able to withstand harsh conditions such and heat and drought. They bloom with catkin like flowers in spring, which attract pollinators. They then put on pods with "beans" inside. The entire pod is edible, native people would grind the dried pods into flour.

Trumpet flower is a fast growing vine, producing beautiful orange trumpet shaped flowers. Flowers are a favorite for humming birds. New growth puts on bright green foliage and the showy blooms, can then becomes strong woody stems. When the blooms are done they put out long green seed pods, maturing to brown in the fall. A strong structure for it to grow on is suggested, but will produce a mounding form without.

Persimmon trees are medium sized trees, with large leaves, that turn yellow and orange in fall. They produce an orange fruit that ripens in the fall.
They come in two basic types, astringent and non-astringent. Astringent persimmons have high tannin levels, that cause them to be bitter until fully ripe. They can be left to ripen on the tree or be picked and ripened on the counter. When ripe they have a jam or jelly consistency, best eaten with a spoon. Non-astringent types are sweet while they are still crisp and will only get sweeter if ripened further, can be sliced or eaten like an apple
Fuyu - Non-astringent - One of the most popular persimmons, produces a light orange fruit that is slightly flat in shape. Can be eaten crisp, or left to ripen further for a sweeter taste. Tree grows 20-30 ft tall
Hachiya - Astringent - Classic baking persimmon, produces large, dark orange, acorn shaped fruits. Must ripen fully to jelly like consistency. Tree grows 20-30 ft tall
Saija - Astringent - It’s name means “the very best one”, it produces small golden fruits. One of the sweetest persimmons when fully ripe. Tree grows 15-25 ft tall
Rib - Astringent - Produces large deeply ribbed fruits.
