These wild almonds are seedlings from Monterey almond trees. Prunus dulcis var. dulcis are know as sweet almonds which are good for eating. Almond trees typically grow to 10-15 feet tall. They do best in regions with warm summers and mild winters. In the spring they put on a showy white blossoms before leafing out into green. Almonds ripen in the fall, when the fuzzy green hull splits open reveling the shell with the nut inside.
