Pear Rootstock - pyrus betulifolia - pyrus celleryana
You will receive an actual tree in a cloth pot. We grow our own plants and seeds at our family farm using organic practices only.
A rootstock is the base of a grafted plant, providing the root system and stem to support the new plant. The different pear tree rootstocks control the tree’s size, vigor, precocity (how early the tree bears fruit), cold hardiness, and partly disease resistance (such as to fire blight).
Pyrus betulifolia, also known as the Birchleaf pear is an ornamental pear variety. It produces vigorous trees which can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. Additionally, it’s the most resistant to psylla feeding and pear decline when you graft it to a Bartlett scion. If you graft onto an Asian pear, the trees can grow to about 9’ tall with pruning since Asian pears are naturally small and precocious.
Pyrus celleryana, also know as a Callery pear is a common ornamental pear variety It is also the most commonly used rootstock for commercial pear production in the US. This is a vigorous rootstock producing a large tree. Resistant to fireblight, leaf spot (quince fleck) and woolly aphid.
These hearty varietys are commonly used as root-stock for edible pears.
